COLORADO SPRINGS | Like a well-oiled machine, all the pieces of the Regis Jesuit girls lacrosse team came together to work fluidly Tuesday afternoon for another playoff victory.
The sixth-seeded Raiders — who racked up the most goals of any team in the state playoffs in its second-round victory over Chaparral (21) — kept the ball movement and offensive diversity they’ve found going on a visit to third-seeded Pine Creek.
Coach Kathryn Ames’ Regis Jesuit team scored nine goals in each half and broke open a close game in the second half on its way to an 18-11 win and a spot in the state semifinals for the first time since 2013.
The Raiders were the first team to earn a spot in the final four scheduled for Saturday at the University of Denver and await their opponent, which will be the winner of Wednesday’s 5:30 p.m. contest between No. 7 Denver East and No. 2 Cherry Creek.
The other two quarterfinal contests are also Wednesday as top-seeded Colorado Academy plays host to No. 9 and No. 4 Aspen is home to No. 5 Valor Christian. (Updated state playoff scoreboard and schedule, here.)
Coming off a first-round bye, Regis Jesuit had six goal scorers against Chaparral and also had six players tally (all with two goals or more) against Pine Creek (15-2).
Sisters Grace and Sidney Weigand notched four goals apiece, sophomores Molly McCarthy and Krissy Rael contributed three apiece and senior Maddie Ferguson and sophomore Cate Lord each has two. Four players also had multiple assists.
Junior goalie Antonia Batuello made six saves and the Raiders’ defense held the Eagles — the state’s top-scoring team — to their fewest goals since April 18. Pine Creek came into the contest on a 15-game winning streak.
