DURANGO |  An investigation is underway after a man who was lying on a highway in southwest Colorado was run over and killed.

Capt. Adrian Driscoll with the Colorado State Patrol tells The Durango Herald that 43-year-old Mark Deuel was lying in the middle of U.S. Highway 160 when he was struck early Saturday morning. The vehicle ran off the road after hitting the Durango man.

Driscoll says it’s unclear why Deuel was on the highway, but alcohol might have played a role.

The driver was not cited.
