DENVER |  A former Arvada city councilwoman who was appointed to replace a state senator who resigned rather than face a recall election is being sworn in.

Rachel Zenzinger, a Democrat from Arvada, will take the oath of office on Friday and officially become the next senator from her district. Chief Justice Michael Bender will administer the oath.

Zenzinger was named to fill the seat of former Sen. Evie Hudak. Hudak resigned last month just days before gun-control opponents planned to turn in signatures seeking to make her the third Colorado Democrat to face recall after the adoption of a slate of gun-control measures.

Democrats have a one-seat majority in the Senate. A Hudak recall election would have risked losing the chamber to Republican control.
