AURORA | A man who shot another man in the back outside an Aurora apartment in 2015 has been sentenced to 32 years in prison.
Lloyd Rickey Henderson, 38, was convicted earlier this year of second-degree murder for gunning down Corey Clemons, 30, at the Canterra at Fitzsimons apartments in September 2015.
In a statement Tuesday, Arapahoe County prosecutors said Henderson shot Clemons without warning while Clemons was arguing with another man.
Henderson “shot him in the back when he was unarmed, and his own mother was an eyewitness,” Senior Deputy District Attorney Thomas Byrnes told the court during sentencing, according to prosecutors.
Henderson then fled the scene, prosecutors said.
Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler said in the statement that Henderson had a prior record that barred him from possessing a gun, but it didn’t stop Henderson for acquiring one.
“Here is yet another previously convicted felon (for stabbing another man) who was able to obtain, use, and dispose of a firearm in violation of our laws. This one happened to be a coward, who shot an innocent man in the back and then gutlessly ran away from his crime and had his girlfriend dispose of his murderous weapon,” he said in the statement. “Corey Clemons deserves to be alive. Henderson deserves to be in prison for decades.”
