Man charged in fatal crash

A man who police say caused a fatal crash as he sped away from a north Aurora shooting is facing three felony charges related to the crash, according

George West

to records.

George West, 29, was formally charged Tuesday with vehicular homicide, vehicular eluding and leaving the scene of an accident involving death.

According to court records, West has not been charged in connection with the shooting that led to the July 28 crash that left Candace Stuart, 66, dead. West was arrested after the crash and later released from Arapahoe County Jail. He remains free on $50,000 bond.

Police said after the crash investigators believe West was behind the wheel of a BMW that sped away from a shooting in the 1100 block of Clinton Street late that night.

Officers chased the car into Denver where it crashed near east 13th Avenue and Olive Street, police said.

A woman was injured in the shooting, police said, but investigators don’t believe she was the intended target. Two other men who were in the car with West were injured in the crash but as of early August had not been charged with a crime, police said.

Aurora police spokesman Officer Frank Fania said nobody has been charged in connection with the shooting and detectives continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting Tuesday.

West does not yet have a lawyer, according to court records, but one is expected to appear on his behalf at next month’s hearing.
