Arrest made in Lima Street stabbing; DA mulling charges

AURORA | Police have made an arrest in connection with a fatal stabbing of an Aurora man Tuesday on Lima Street, but prosecutors have not yet decided whether the 51-year-old woman taken into custody will be charged.

Toni M. Carrethers, 51, was arrested Tuesday in connection with the slaying early that morning of Alvin Carrethers, 55, in a home in the 1400 block of Lima Street, according to Arapahoe County prosecutors.

According to state records and the Arapahoe County district attorney’s office, Toni Carrethers was arrested on a first-degree murder charge.

Michelle Yi, a spokeswoman for the Arapahoe County DA’s office, said  Toni Carrethers appeared in Arapahoe County court Wednesday for advisement of potential charges. She was later released with no bond.

Prosecutors and Aurora police are investigating the case and won’t make a decision on possible charges until the investigation is complete, Yi said.

Yi said she wasn’t sure what relationship there was between Toni and Alvin Carrethers.

According to CBI records, Toni Carrethers has been arrested dozens of times since 1983 on weapons, drugs and traffic charges. Carrethers, who also goes by the name Toni Abiodun and several other aliases, was sent to prison on drug charges in 2001 and later arrested several times for parole violations, according to CBI.

Before being arrested Tuesday on a murder charge, her most recent arrest came in January when she was charged with battery and domestic violence, according to CBI.
