AURORA | Aurora police have arrested a 32-year-old man for his role in a shooting at the Weatherstone Apartments in north Aurora Thanksgiving night.

Police recently arrested Colin McKinnon, 32, and charged him with criminal attempt of first-degree murder, first-degree assault and possession of a weapon by a previous offender.

McKinnon has a lengthy criminal history spanning multiple Front Range jurisdictions dating back to at least 2006, according to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records.

He has faced dozens of traffic-related charges and several counts of assault and domestic violence. In 2007, he was found guilty of felony weapon possession and sentenced to 18 months in prison. Two years ago, he was sentenced to five days in jail for a traffic charge.

Aurora police tweeted at about 9:30 p.m. Nov. 22 that officers had responded to reports of a shooting in the vicinity of the 15400 block of East 13th Avenue.

Police later confirmed a shooting occurred in a common area within the Weatherstone Apartments complex at 15410 E. 13th Ave. That address is located near the intersection of Chambers Road and East Colfax Avenue. It’s directly behind Hinkley High School.

The person who was shot was still in serious condition as of Monday afternoon, according to Bill Hummel, spokesman for the Aurora Police Department.

Prosecution of McKinnon’s case has been handed to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
